Smart public lighting upgrade in Leše, Senično and Sebenje, Tržič

In three rural–suburban settlements of the Municipality of Tržič, old and inefficient street lighting was replaced with modern LED luminaires with smart, adaptable brightness control.

The challenge

Old luminaires consumed too much electricity, needed frequent maintenance and gave uneven light on residential streets and roads.

What they did

As part of the regional “Pametna razsvetljava” initiative coordinated by BSC Kranj, the municipality modernised street lighting in the three settlements.

  • Obsolete fixtures removed
  • LED luminaires able to adjust brightness to needs
  • More even illumination, removing over-lighting

Results

Better reliability and road visibility, less maintenance, lower electricity costs and less unnecessary light spill than the old system.

Public sources give no data on shielding, colour temperature, number of luminaires or dimming schedules – worth confirming with the municipality before presenting it as a dark-sky example.

Lessons learned

  1. 1Replace outdated fixtures systematically, not piece by piece.
  2. 2Use LED with adaptive control from the start.
  3. 3Cooperate regionally to lower investment costs.
  4. 4Align upgrades with national lighting policy.

Can you do it too?

Highly transferable to other small municipalities with outdated lighting. Key enablers:

  • Access to funding
  • Political support
  • A clear municipal lighting strategy

Why it matters for astrotourism

Not designed for astrotourism, but less unnecessary light means lower sky glow and better night skies in the rural areas of Tržič.
